Rotating Breakout Sessions
Transport Skills Station
Speakers: Anthony Sanchez, Matt Walker

  • Introduction and demonstration of equipment for neonatal/pediatric critical care transport, including
    ground and air logistics planning
  • Patient diagnosis review and care planning with focus on respiratory therapy modalities
  • Identification and preparation for escalation of care (e.g., HFNC → NIV → intubation)
  • Demonstration of loading/unloading patients into isolates and ground/flight gurneys

Exploring Ventilation Strategies: Recruitment & De-recruitment of Lung Tissue

  • See the Difference: Compare healthy vs. injured pig lungs to visualize expansion differences
  • Bagging Under Three Conditions: Observe compliance and recoil at 0, 5, and 15 cmH₂O PEEP
  • Building PEEP Slowly: Stepwise increases (0→5→10→15→20 cmH₂O) to assess lung stiffness/volume
  • De-recruitment in Action: Step down PEEP (15→10→5→0) to observe collapse patterns
  • Airway Suction & De-recruitment Dynamics: Assess volume/compliance loss during suction and
    recovery with stepwise PEEP
  • Percussive HFV Recruitment: Use the Percussionaire Bronchotron at varied settings to compare
    alveolar recruitment

Neonatal Intubation

  • Neonatal airway anatomy and physiology overview
  • Pre-intubation assessment and equipment/team preparation
  • Aseptic, atraumatic intubation technique
  • Confirmation and securing of ETT placement (clinical, CO₂ detection, imaging)
  • Minimizing complications: hypoxia, bradycardia, trauma, misplacement
  • Post-intubation management: monitoring, tube stability, ventilation settings
  • Effective teamwork and communication during resuscitation and care
